ROCKY HILL The Mary Jacobs Library branch of the Somerset County Library System will close Monday, Dec. 22 and will reopen Monday, Jan. 5.
"During the closing, movers will pack many of the books, audiovisual materials and shelving in the library and store them until the renovation and expansion are completed, probably in November 2004," said Library Director Mei Mei Morris.
On Jan. 5, the library will reopen part of its building and staff will continue to provide library services with the resources it has available. Staff members are currently sorting out the most popular materials, ensuring that these will be available for immediate checkout.
In addition, library users may borrow materials from any of the branches of the Somerset County Library System by placing requests in person or through the online library catalog at www.somerset.lib.nj.us and have them sent to the Mary Jacobs Library for pickup.
Ms. Morris said the library renovation and expansion will provide much-needed room for a separate children’s area, space for quiet study, computers, larger collections and meeting room space for community groups.
Founded in 1974, the Mary Jacobs Library benefited from two previous expansions as its service area grew from a population of about 7,000, when the library was first built, to over 19,000 today.
Serving the communities of Rocky Hill and Montgomery Township, the library was a gift of Harold Jacobs in memory of his wife, Mary Barrowman Jacobs, who spent her childhood in Rocky Hill.
