The Rev. Leonard Philip Samuelson
The Rev. Samuelson, 85, of Reedley, Calif., formerly of Allenwood and Wall Township, died Nov. 14. Born in Winnetka, Ill., he graduated from New Trier High School in 1937 and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve. In May 1941, while in college, he was called into active duty as a first class seaman on the U.S.S. Lea in the North Atlantic. He was later assigned to the U.S.S. Vincennes as a yeoman for the ship’s librarian, navigator and chaplain. His ship, which had been engaged in action in the Coral Sea, Battle of Midway, Doolittle’s Raid on Tokyo and the landing of the Marines at Guadalcanal, sunk as a result of the shelling by the Japanese 8th fleet in the Battle of Savo Island, resulting in the loss of 332 of his shipmates. He then served in the South Pacific as chief yeoman to Adm. Richmond Kelly Turner until 1943, when he was shipped stateside and given leave to marry his college sweetheart. After an honorable discharge at the end of World War II, he earned a bachelor of arts degree from Eastern College (founded in 1932 as a department of the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary) and two more degrees from the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, both located in the Philadelphia area. He served as a missionary in Arizona to the Hopi Indians and from 1970-80 was the pastor of Lindsay First Baptist Church. He had also been an Eagle Scout. In 1990, he and his wife retired in Reedley, where they both were active members of Reedley First Baptist Church. The Rev. Samuelson was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Kathryn Allen Samuelson, in 1996. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Laura Samuelson of Maui, Hawaii, and Bill and Karen Samuelson of Coarsegold, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Liz and Bob Stiffler of Orofino, Idaho, and Debby and Sam Estes of Reedley; a brother and sister-in-law, Glenn and Lois Samuelson of Lansdale, Pa.; a sister, Ruth Samuelson of Carol Stream, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held at Allenwood Cemetery, Wall Township.
Barney Davis
Mr. Davis, 93, died Nov. 23 at Bartley Health Care Nursing and Rehabilitation, Jackson. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in Queens, N.Y., before moving to The Villages of Howell in 1976. He was a member of the Senior Social Club of Howell, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the Men’s Club, as well as the Masons Geba Lodge in Queens, N.Y., for 55 years. For 28 years he was the proprietor of the Jackson Heights (Queens) Camera Shop, retiring in 1973. He was self-educated and enjoyed classical music. He was predeceased by two brothers and six sisters. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Hannah Slobodow Davis; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Virginia Davis of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Robert Berger of East Brunswick; a sister, Irene Chester of Florida; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels, East Brunswick, followed by interment at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, N.Y.
John J. Fagliarone
Mr. Fagliarone, 93, of Middletown, died Nov. 24 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Italy, he moved to the United States in 1912 and resided in North Bergen before moving to Middletown 20 years ago. He was a printing pressman at Local No. 51, New York City, where he was employed 50 years before retiring. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He was past president of the Cliffside Park chapter of AARP and a member of the Middletown AARP. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joanna Passarella Fagliarone; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Joseph C. and Mary Joan Fagliarone of Middletown, Carmine J. and Antoinette Fagliarone of Lakewood, and John R. Fagliarone of San Diego; a daughter and son-in-law, Diane S. and Joseph Stocklinski of Cranford; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Church, followed by entombment at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.
