Monroe’s 9-year-old travel basketball team took sole possession of first place in Central Jersey League play with a victory over Branchburg (42-27). Their tough man-to-man defense led to 23 rebounds, 20 steals and five blocked shots. Brian Nale, Victor Sorrento, Ryan Germano, Mike D’Ambrosio and Robbie Scardilli collected 18 rebounds, while Mike Fitzgerald, Chris Laino, Tyler Cushman (five steals, six assists) and Danny Brix (seven steals, four blocks) held Branchburg’s offensive attack off-balance. Offensively, Ryan Genevieve and Brix chipped in 25 points while Chris Viani, Germano and Sorrento collected 17 points to secure their 11th straight victory and improve their season record to 12-1.

Monroe’s 10-year-old travel basketball team ran its Mid-Monmouth League record to 4-0 with an impressive away victory against Berkeley by a score of 45-32. Monroe’s offense was led by Matt Gorham, Jimmy Small and Alex Vizcaino, who combined for 30 points. Mike Mahmoud, Xavier Selby and Mike Scaroone combined for 12 points of offense. Monroe’s defense rose to the occasion, limiting Berkeley to just one point in the third quarter. Monroe’s defense forced eight turnovers and had four blocked shots in the third quarter. Aggressive defense by Mike Walp, Nick Dini, Clint Winters, Kashawn Stroughn and Brian Spencer preserved the victory for Monroe.
