Gas station robbed; attendant beaten
EAST BRUNSWICK — A gas station was robbed early Sunday by a group of men who jumped the attendant, according to police.
The robbery took place around 12:30 a.m. at the Hess station at 232 Route 18.
Police said a 61-year-old male gas station attendant approached Patrolman Craig Hoover to report having just been robbed. Hoover had stopped a car nearby in an unrelated matter.
The attendant told the officer that four or five males came to the gas station in a red four-door compact car. After gas was put in the car and the driver paid for the gas, three or four of the occupants in the car got out, jumped the attendant from behind and took cash out of his jacket pocket, according to the police report.
They also struck him in the face and head with their fists. The attendant suffered swelling to his right eye, as well as abrasions from the incident. He was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, to be treated for his injuries.
The suspects were described as Hispanic, and all in their 20s. The driver was about 6 feet tall with a black mustache and wore a light brown jacket with a fur-rimmed hood. Another suspect was wearing a light blue jacket.
Police said that approximately $500 was taken during the robbery.
