An overturned tractor-trailer shut down a portion of New Road for over an hour near Sondek Park Wednesday morning.
According to police, John C. McDougall, 40, of Newton, was charged with careless driving after his 1996 Western tractor-trailer flipped over a guardrail while traveling west on New Road, flattening a section of the guardrail as it landed on its side, police said. Mr. McDougall was not injured.
"The driver was coming out of park, loaded with brush for recycling. He said he was checking his mirrors when he veered to the right and rode up the guard rail and tipped over," said Patrol Officer Bob Weiler. "There was a minor gas leak that was clamped off."
South Brunswick Police, the Monmouth Junction Fire Department, members of South Brunswick Public Works and employees of George’s Towing Company of Cranbury were called to the accident.
The towing company used two tow trucks to secure the truck and a backhoe was used get the truck off of its side.
