Obituaries for week of Feb. 12

John Cornew
   John Edward Cornew Jr. 76, died Jan. 17 in Fort Pierce, Fla.
   Mr. Cornew was born in Trenton and was a lifelong resident of Lawrenceville, and a part-time resident of Fort Pierce since 1985.
   He was a lifelong member of the Lawrenceville Fire Company. He was a member of the Rosedale Sportsman’s Club and a former member of the New Jersey Hobos Camping Club.
   He graduated in 1946 from Princeton High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and attended Trenton Junior College. He was retired from PSEG – Trenton Gas.
   Son of the late John E. Cornew, Sr. and Catherine O. Cornew, he is survived by his wife of 43 years, Gene Danbury Cornew; daughter, Kathleen Cornew, son and daughter-in-law, John Edward III and Janeen Cornew; and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Haas all of Lawrenceville.
   A memorial mass will be celebrated this Saturday, Feb. 14 at 9 a.m. at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church at 1253 Lawrenceville Road.
   In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Lawrenceville Fire Company, 64 Phillips Avenue, Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
Janet Kwiatkoski
   Janet R. Kwiatkoski, 70, died Jan. 22 at University Medical Center at Princeton.
   Born in Pittsburgh she grew up in Williamsport, Pa. and was a resident of California, before moving to New Jersey.
   A lifelong educator and child advocate, she worked as an elementary school teacher for 16 years in California, South Brunswick, Warren and Lawrence townships.
   She then became a middle school guidance counselor for 17 years in Lawrence and went back to the classroom for the last three years of her career before retiring from the Ben Franklin Elementary School in Lawrence in 1992.
   She graduated from Bloomsburg State Teacher’s College with a degree in elementary education in 1955.
   She started teaching elementary school at Los Nietos School in the Los Angeles area, where she taught a number of the young students that played the king’s children in the movie "The King and I" starring Yul Brenner.
   Following her marriage in 1956 she lived in Whittier, Calif. and moved to Somerville in 1959. She then moved to Kendall Park in South Brunswick and ultimately settled in Montgomery Township in 1972.
   She earned a master of arts degree in 1969 and a master of education degree in 1975 from Trenton State College. She was inducted into the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society in 1981, consulted for the Atlantic Middle States Commission, Elementary Educational Division and also contributed to a chapter in the textbook "Improving Middle School Guidance" by Stamm and Nissman.
   Following her retirement in 1992, she worked as a volunteer at the information desk at University Medical Center at Princeton and continued working there until her death.
   She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a favorite destination.
   She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Charles Kwiatkoski; son Robert Kwiatkoski of Nags Head, N.C.; daughter Cheryl Middleton of Baltimore; and sisters Carol A. Neth of McMurray, Pa., Jean Gilliard of Newton, Pa. and Joan Lukitsch of Dublin, Pa.
   Funeral services were private under the direction of the Hillsborough Funeral Home, Hillsborough.

Ella Cooper
   Ella H. Cooper, 91, died Jan. 26 at Salem Hospital, Salem, Ma.
   She was born in Fessenden, N.D., in 1912 to Carl and Bertha Drescher. The family moved to New Jersey, where she graduated from Trenton High School. She married John L. Cooper and together they raised their son Robert.
   They lived in Lawrenceville for many years, and before Ella moved to Marblehead with her family in 1984, she received a citation from the mayor of Lawrenceville for her achievements in active community service.
   She had been a quality weapons inspector since World War II with the DeLaval Steam Turbine Company in Trenton for 37 years. Later in life, she volunteered at the Grosvenor Park Nursing Home in Salem, Ma.
   Her husband John died in 1990.
   She is survived by her son, Robert Cooper and his wife Mindy Cook of Marblehead; her grandchildren, Christopher Cooper and his wife Shanti of Cambridge, Ma., and Jason Cooper of Marblehead; along with nieces, nephews and friends.
   A private service was held last week under the direction of Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, Marblehead.

LeeAnne Carter
   LeeAnne Lilly Carter, 3½ months old, died suddenly on Saturday at her residence.
   She was the beloved daughter of Joel and Emily Wu Carter and sister of Ryan Carter and Hope Carter.
   She is also survived by her paternal grandfather, Mark Carter; and maternal grandmother, Li-Li Lin.
   Funeral services were Saturday at New Life Christian Church, 4 Freedom Drive, Newtown, PA 18940.
   Interment was private.

Francis Hoffman
   Francis Joseph Hoffman, 69, died Feb. 5 at The Elms of Cranbury.
   Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Monroe Township for the past 55 years.
   He retired from Monroe Township after several years of service. He was past chief of the Applegarth Fire Company where he was a charter life member. During his membership, he held many offices and positions. He was an U.S. Army veteran and served as the Military Police.
   He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling.
   He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughter and son-in-law, Denise A. and James S. Helms of Englishtown; his son and daughter-in-law, James F. and Regina M. Hoffman of Lawrenceville; three grandchildren, Crystal Helms and Connor and Sean Hoffman; and several cousins.
   A Funeral Mass was Monday at Nativity of Our Lord Church, Monroe Township.
   Interment followed in Holy Cross Burial Park, South Brunswick.

Phyllis Guagliardo
   Phyllis Gervasio Guagliardo, 80, died Feb. 5 with her family at her side at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Hamilton.
   Born in Trenton, she was a lifelong resident.
   She was one of the founders of Italian People’s Bakery, Inc., 63 Butler St., Trenton.
   She was a member of St. Joachim Church and its Third Order of St. Clare, the Assunta Society of Casandrino and a former member of the 1-20 Club of St. Joachim Church and the Senior Citizens of HELP.
   She was predeceased by her parents, Pasquale and Margaret Sylvester Gervasio; and her brothers, Frank, John and Victor Gervasio.
   She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Joseph Guagliardo; one son and daughter-in-law, Carmen and Judy Guagliardo of Bordentown; a daughter, Donna Strandskov of Hamilton and Rick Strandskov of Ewing; a sister, Tessie Gachetti of Trenton; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Brian, Matthew and Stephanie; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Gervasio of Lawrenceville and Rita Gervasio of Hamilton; a very dear friend, Marion Mazzatelli of Trenton; brother-in-law and spouse, Carmen and Anne Guagliardo of Robbinsville; sisters-in-law, Mamie Scarlata and Rose Burger, both of Trenton; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
   The Funeral was Monday from Gruerio Funeral Home, 311 Chestnut Ave., Trenton.
   A Mass of Christian Burial was Monday at St. Joachim Church, Butler Street, Trenton.
   Entombment followed in The Garden of Peace Mausoleum at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Hamilton.

Anna Szejner
   Anna J. Olkowski Szejner, 77, died Friday at home.
   Born in Trenton, she was a lifelong Trenton and Lawrenceville resident.
   She retired in 1987 after 40 years service with the DeLaval Turbine Manufacturing Company of Trenton.
   Daughter of the late Thomas Sr. and Anna Ewiak Olkowski; sister of the late Thomas Olkowski Jr., she is survived by her husband of 56 years, Edward P. Szejner of Lawrenceville; her son and daughter-in-law, Donald T. and Lorenc Szejner of Clifton, Va.; her daughter and son-in-law, Maureen and Mark Litton of Rye, Co.; six grandchildren, Scott, Melissa, Beth, Ethan, Justin and Megan; four step-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Marie, Taylor and Jennifer; her brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Renee Olkowski of Toms River; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Hattie and Joseph Worek of Ewing Township, Monica and Bruno Salmestrelli of Ewing Township and several nieces and nephews.
   The funeral was Wednesday from the Winowicz Funeral Chapel, 865 Brunswick Ave., Trenton.
   Funeral Liturgy was Wednesday in St. Hedwig’s Church.
   Burial was in St. Hedwig’s Cemetery, Ewing Township.

Doris Hansell
   Doris Carlene Baker Hansell, 60, died Saturday in Capital Health System at Fuld after a battle with cancer.
   Born in Chambersburg, Pa., she was a resident of Lawrenceville for the past 31 years.
   She was a graduate of Shippensburg Area High School Class of 1961 and continued her education receiving her nursing degree from Temple University Hospital School of Nursing in 1966. In 1968 she received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, PA, and went on to receive her MSN from Gwynedd-Mercy College in Gwynedd Valley, PA in 1958.
   She was employed by Temple University Hospital from 1966 to 1967 and then became a nursing instructor with the hospital from 1967 to 1969. In 1969 she began teaching at the Cochran School of Nursing at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, NY and remained there until accepting a position at Helene Fuld Hospital School of Nursing in 1972. In 1974 she began instructing at Mercer Medical Center and when both Helene Fuld and Mercer Medical Center merged she remained as a nursing educator with the newly formed Capital Health System.
   Daughter of the late Vernon F. and Hazel Kyle Elliott Baker and sister of the late Raymond Baker; she is survived by her husband of 37 years, John M. Hansell Jr.; two sons, Andrew L. Hansell of Wildwood and Timothy B. Hansell at home; three sisters-in-law, Shirley Baker Runkle of York, Pa., Linda Saxon of Wayne, Pa., and Dorothy Moffett and her husband Ed of Hudson, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
   A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church, 1039 Lawrence Road, Lawrenceville with the Rev. Nina Peck-Reeder, pastor, officiating.
   Friends may call Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Doris Clayton
   Doris M. Clayton, 80, died Monday in St. Francis Medical Center.
   Born in Hamilton Township, she resided most of her life in Lawrence.
   She retired in 1984 as a principal clerk stenographer with the state Department of Transportation after 25 years of service.
   She was a member of the Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church and was the recipient of a Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership.
   Daughter of the late Charles and Mary Horne Shive; sister of the late Charles William Shive and wife of the late Robert I. Clayton, she is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert G. and Lisa Clayton of Washington Crossing, Pa., and Donald R. and Maryann Smith of Lawrenceville and two grandchildren David and Kristin Smith.
   Also surviving are three sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce and Richard Seabridge of Lawrenceville, Betty and Jerry Carter of Jupiter, Fla., and Audrey and Harry Yost of Seymour, Ct., and a sister-in-law Lorraine Shive of Yardville.
   The Funeral will be held 11 a.m. today (Thursday) from Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Rd., Lawrenceville with the Rev. Nina Peck-Reeder, pastor of the Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church, officiating.
   Burial will be in Ewing Cemetery.

James Price
   James W. Price, 75, died Sunday at Deborah Heart and Lung Center, Browns Mills.
   Born in Lawrence Township, he resided in Lawrence and later Ewing Township before moving to Whiting 10 years ago.
   He was an U.S. Navy veteran.
   He was the former owner of Clark’s Floor Covering in Lawrenceville. He retired in 1984 after 40 years in the business.
   He was a former coach for many years with both the Lawrence Township Little League and Babe Ruth League.
   He was a member and past president of the Lawrence Township Lions Club and was a former member of the Slackwood Presbyterian Church.
   Son of the late William and Mary Morris Price; he is survived by his wife, Joan Tittensor Price; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James W. Price of Baltimore, Timothy and Mary Price of Bordentown and Todd and Mari Price of Lawrenceville; five grandchildren, Allie, Emily, Anna, Scott and Eric Price; and several cousins.
   The Funeral will be held 1 p.m. Friday from Poulson & Van Hise Funeral Directors, 650 Lawrence Rd., Lawrenceville with the Rev. Nina Peck-Reeder, pastor of the Lawrence Road Presbyterian Church officiating.
   Burial will be in the Ewing Church Cemetery.
   Friends may call 6-8 p.m. today (Thursday) at the funeral home. The Lions Club will hold a service at 7 p.m.

Mary Wyzga
   Mary Wyzga, 98, died Sunday at her home in Lawrenceville.
   She was born in Trenton. Her working life included employment at Young’s Rubber, Corday China and DeLaval Steam Turbine where she supported the World War II effort on the homefront.
   The last of her generation, she enjoyed homemaking, gardening, crocheting, playing bingo and dancing, especially the polka.
   She was the daughter of the late Joseph Gorczynski and Anna Midura Gorczynski and widow of distinguished World War II veteran, Walter S. Wyzga.
   She is survived by her niece, Irene Esposito also of Lawrenceville; her great-nephew, Dr. Joseph M. Esposito and his wife Elizabeth Ann Esposito of Morehead City, N.C.; her great-nieces Courtney Nance Esposito of Lawrenceville and Kate Meredith Esposito of Trenton; her great-great-niece, Rachel Beaulieu-Esposito, Esq. and her husband Thomas of Durham, N.C.; her great-great-nephew Luke Anthony Esposito and his wife Alena of Winterville, N.C.; and her great-great-niece Christine Fels and her husband Nicholas of Horsham, Pa.
   Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at St. Hedwig’s Roman Catholic Church and will be celebrated by family friend, Msgr. Walter E. Nolan.

Evelyn Singleton-Willis
   Evelyn Marie Singleton-Willis, 61, died Saturday at Princeton University Hospital.
   Born in Trenton and a lifelong resident, she was a graduate of Trenton Central High School and the University of Illinois, Champagne, Ill.
   Her entrepreneurship began with the original Stacy’s Bridal Shop that evolved into The Stacy Shop and, ultimately, Stacy at Evelyn’s of which she was co-owner.
   She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and formerly served as Trustee Aide. Evelyn was also a member of the New Jersey and National Associations of Female Executives.
   Predeceased by her parents, Charles C. Jr. and Mamie Singleton; her sister, Betty Jean Davis-Reynard; she is survived by her husband, Lloyd E. Willis Jr.; one son, Stephen Willis (Heather) of West Orange; one daughter, Tami Willis-Arasli (Harun) of Alexandria, Va.; one grandson, Lloyd E. Willis III of West Orange; one brother, Charles C. Singleton III (Crystal) of North Brunswick; two sisters, Christine Singleton of Atlanta, Ga., and Florence Leonard of Trenton; her mother-in-law, Audrey Willis of Trenton; three uncles, John C. Singleton (Charity) of Lawrence, Robert Dorsey of Baltimore, Md., and Rhodes Chambliss (Gladys) of Newark; nine aunts, Rose Singleton of East Hartford, Ct., Flossie Carroll (Samuel) of Hartford, Ct., Dorothy Singleton of Lawrence, Florence Singleton of Ewing, Mary Lundy (George), Willie P. Chambliss, all of Atlanta, Ga., Rose Mae Singleton of Glassboro, Areatha Singleton of Philadelphia, Pa., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at Shiloh Baptist Church, 340 Rev. Dr. Howard S. Woodson Way (Calhoun St.), Trenton, with the Rev. Smith, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Brooklyn Heights., N.Y., eulogist and the Rev. Darrell Armstrong, host pastor.
   Calling hours from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church.
   Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton Township.
   Arrangements are by Anderson Funeral Service.
Frank Stolsits
   Frank L. Stolsits, 79, of Lawrenceville, died Feb. 2 in the Tandem Health Care in Lawrenceville.
   He was born in Northampton, Pa.
   He received a B.S. in economics and a master’s in business administration from Gettysburg College.
   He retired in 1969 as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
   He began a new career with the state and retired again in 1981 as an inheritance tax processor.
   He is survived by his wife, Margaret Magee Stolsits; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
   A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Church of St. Ann on Friday. Burial with full military honors followed in the Brigadier General William C. Doyle New Jersey Veterans Cemetery.
