EDITORIAL: Congratulations to the queen of the lanes.
Lauren Sohmer is the queen of the lanes.
The South Brunswick High School senior achieved something earlier this month that few in Viking history have accomplished. She won an individual state championship.
Lauren had been one of 47 bowlers to qualify for the Feb. 13 championship tourney (along with her teammate, freshman Suzanne Bleacher). She then posted a remarkable 1,945 total for nine games that day, a 216 average, leaving only two frames open and rolling strikes on three of her last four balls to seal her victory.
Then, after winning the title, the self-professed bowling junkie bowled another three games in a private league. For fun.
The bowling teams at the high school are rarely afforded the same level of respect that the football and basketball teams get, but the kids who go out and compete on the lanes are every bit the student-athlete as those who run the pick and roll.
And Lauren Sohmer has the trophy to prove it.
Congratulations to Lauren and the entire girls bowling team. You’ve done South Brunswick High School proud.
