Monmouth County has announced that as a safety test, it will implement a temporary reduction in the speed limit along County Route 50, known as Swimming River Road, in the Lincroft section of Middletown. The test is scheduled to begin April 1. The speed limit will be reduced from 40 mph to 35 mph on the stretch of Swimming River Road between Newman Springs Road (County Route 520) and High Point Road/Majestic South. On or about March 22, signs will be posted at the approaches to the test area advising motorists of the upcoming change in the speed limit.
This test will be coordinated with the Township of Middletown and local residents. The measure will reduce the speed limit for a period of 12 months, during which time its effectiveness will be evaluated. If the reduction of the speed limit proves to be effective in improving safety, the county intends to make the new 35 mph speed limit permanent.
During the next 12 months, the 35 mph speed limit will be strictly enforced by the Middletown Police Department, according to the press release. Speed studies will be conducted periodically throughout the test year in order to determine the effectiveness of the reduced speed limit.
