OLD BRIDGE — Police are seeking two men who allegedly beat and stabbed the owner of a Route 34 towing service Monday night after grabbing a briefcase full of cash and checks.

The 51-year-old male victim, whom police did not identify, was attacked at approximately 9:48 p.m. as he was walking out of a trailer that houses Jerry’s Towing Inc., according to Capt. Robert Bonfante of the Old Bridge police.

The trailer is located behind an automatic security gate adjacent to Route 34 Auto Sales and Salvage, located at 253 Route 34 north.

The victim, carrying a briefcase that Bonfante described as "filled with thousands of dollars of cash and checks," was preparing to leave the trailer for the night when he heard the security gate open and walked outside.

Two masked men that the victim could not identify then grabbed him and continuously beat him on the ground near the trailer’s steps, Bonfante said. One of the suspects stabbed the man twice in the back before the pair grabbed the briefcase and its contents, and ran off, Bonfante continued.

The victim was unable to provide descriptive details of his assailants, according to police.

"It all happened so quickly," Bonfante said.

The victim was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, New Brunswick, by a local first aid squad for treatment of stab wounds, he said.

The case remains under investigation by the detective bureau, Bonfante noted. Detective Mike Blahota is leading the investigation.

Employees of Jerry’s Towing refused to comment when visited by a reporter from the Suburban at their worksite Tuesday.

A manager at the adjacent Route 34 Auto Sales and Service also refused to comment.
