Robert J. Young, 52, of Smithfield, Va., died Wednesday in Flagler Hospital, St. Augustine, Fla.
A former resident of Jacksonville, Fla., he was born in Trenton and was a graduate of The Pennington School and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kingsport, N.Y., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in marine engineering.
After graduation, he was employed as a construction engineer and later a marine superintendent for Apex Marine Corporation, a shipping company in New York. In 1980 he was one of four individuals who established International Marine Consultants (IMC), a maritime transportation and shipping company.
Mr. Young served IMC for 15 years as owner and vice president of engineering and operations. After leaving IMC, he was co-owner and vice president of Marine Operations for Commodore Cruise Lines for five years after which he served as a consultant to various shipping, financial and insurance companies on maritime issues.
Mr. Young is survived by his parents, Abraham and Virdee Young of Ewing Township; a daughter, Melissa Young; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Debra Young of LaGrangeville, N.Y.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Michael Winkler of Pennington, Eleanor and Delvin Letiman of Ellicott City, Md., and Gloria and Thomas Tomaszewski of Langhorne, Pa; a companion, Theresa Williams of Smithfield, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday at Orland’s Ewing Memorial Chapel, Ewing Township.
Burial followed at Ewing Cemetery.
