Memorial Day time to honor those who sacrificed lives
America rose to greatness through the efforts of our veterans. Their service saw us through two world wars and conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. Today, our service men and women are fighting against aggression in Afghanistan and Iraq, as they have done, when called upon, in other parts of the world.
Historians have said that the greatest accomplishment of the 20th century was the spread of freedom and democracy throughout the world. America’s veterans played a leading role in securing that freedom and, today, America stands as the beacon of freedom and hope the world over.
We have sent our best young men and women around the world not to conquer, but to liberate. And though the price of freedom is often high, their dedication and commitment to this great nation, and all that it stands for, has remained constant. They have answered the call bravely and have given their full measure of devotion.
On Memorial Day, we acknowledge our debt of gratitude to our honored dead. And we renew our commitment to ensuring that New Jersey’s veterans are cared for with the dignity and respect they have earned.
We are working every day to support the state’s 600,000 veterans. Important projects are under way that will increase capacity at our three veterans’ homes. At the Vineland Veterans’ Home, we have begun construction of a new facility that will expand its capacity by 68 percent. In Paramus, we are building a new all-purpose room to provide a place for social events, volunteer work and other activities that were previously held in the cafeteria. And just recently, we opened the Old Glory Wing at the Menlo Park Veterans’ Memorial Home to improve care for veterans who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer’s.
In addition, we have preserved the Veterans’ Property Tax Deduction of $250, and we are providing $1.5 million to fund the construction of a World War II Memorial in New Jersey to honor those who served our state and our country during the war. I also signed legislation that provides tax exemptions for sales made at concession stands in New Jersey’s veterans’ homes.
As the son of a former Marine, I recognize the bravery and dedication of the men and women who have served our country, no matter the cost. It is through their sacrifice, and that of their families, that we are able to enjoy the freedoms we hold so dear today.
As governor, I humbly thank you for all you have done for our great nation.
James E. McGreevey is the governor of New Jersey.
