NEW EGYPT — If you can win, it’s always a lot more satisfying to win big — and that’s just what Rob Ormsbee of Wall and Tommy Beamer of Williamstown did on Saturday night at New Egypt Speedway.
Ormsbee took his second consecutive Mr. Super Stock title race, sponsored by Dick Greenfield Dodge, and young Beamer beat the best in the business to win his first career Modified feature, sponsored by Pioneer Pole Buildings.
"The race track was just awesome tonight," said Ormsbee after taking the title, the huge trophy and the $1,000 top prize. "We’ve been struggling the past few weeks, and I’ve spent a lot of time working on the car. I want to thank my wife for putting up with it — all that time in the garage really paid off."
Ormsbee showed his hand early in the 25-lap/double points Mr. Super Stock Classic, blasting from 10th to fifth in the first two laps. By lap five, Ormsbee was in the lead, setting a new one-lap track record for the division. While the rest of the pack jockeyed for position, Ormsbee continued to fly in another stratosphere, and took his second Mr. Super Stock crown in as many tries, padding his point lead with double markers. A determined Robert Melton finished second, with Jon Hewitt third, Mick Search fourth and Kory Fleming coming on at the end for fifth.
The Modified 30 was a nail-biter for the Beamer clan, as three-time track champion Billy Pauch hunted down and closed on the race leader in the final going. With no cautions to level the playing field, Beamer was able to keep the crafty veteran behind him, and cruised across the line for the first Modified victory of his career, becoming the second division rookie to score in 2004 and the eighth different winner this year. Pauch settled for second, with Mike McAleer, Jimmy Horton and Darren McCaughey chasing. After Saturday’s race, Pauch and Horton are tied for first in the division point battle.
"I was hoping that I was out front far enough that by the time those guys [Pauch and Horton] got through, I would be gone," said Beamer, 23.
Phillipsburg’s Gary Butler, the defending division champion, scored his second of the year in the 20-lap Sportsman fray, sponsored by Mystic Screen Printing & Embroidery. Butler snatched the lead on lap nine, and held off Mike Howardson’s advances for the win. John McClelland, division point-leader Larry Kline and Mike Krachun trailed Butler and Howardson.
The Advantage Financial/Cradle Rock Developers Rookie Sportsman Series race went nonstop, with John Salvatore Jr., of Martinsville, winning his first of the season. Kenny VanDerveer, Adam Huff, E.J. Harrington and Kristina McVay followed Salvatore to the stripe. Chad Barney, who finished eighth, continues to sit atop the series points.
