To the editor:
In 2000, two Texas oilmen became President and Vice-President. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that their policies have benefited oil companies. Unfortunately, Big Oil’s profits have come at the expense of the average American.
When George W. Bush became President, gas cost $1.51 per gallon. This week, average gasoline prices for consumers passed the $2 mark for the first time ever a 33 percent increase during the Bush Administration. These prices will cost American motorists a total of $42 billion this year alone.
These trends will not change as long as Big Oil controls the White House.
Fortunately, there is a presidential candidate who promotes a consumer-friendly energy policy: John Kerry. Sen. Kerry’s plan will make America independent of Mideast oil in 10 years by creating alternative fuels like ethanol and making cars more efficient.
Furthermore, Sen. Kerry’s plan will create 500,000 new jobs over the next decade, as America produces energy at home using renewable fuels. John Kerry has proven his commitment to energy efficiency throughout his 20 years in the Senate; as president, he can accomplish even more.
This November, let’s put a stop to rising gas prices, and give John Kerry a chance to put America on the road to energy independence.
