LETTER: Stars and stripes must be illuminated

To the editor:

It is very disturbing that both the property manager and the president of the Ponds Condominium Association in Monroe refuse to show our great American flag the proper respect it deserves.
Most people know that if our flag is displayed at night, it must be illuminated. This means a light directly on the flag.
The board of directors and the property manager have been reminded, many, many times over a long period of time that there is no direct and adequate light on either of the flags in our community, at the main entrance and opposite the clubhouse entrance.
Phyllis Magier, the president of the Ponds Condominium Association, recently said this is the best that can be done. The quality of the lighting on the flag is not subject to her opinion. There is a right way and a wrong. Unfortunately, the Ponds is not doing it right.
During the past year, over 750 brave Americans have given their lives in support of the ideals represented by the American flag. Our way of life and our great country are embodied in the symbol of the Stars and Stripes and the Ponds doesn’t feel it is important enough to shine a light to show our pride and gratitude.
Again the Ponds board of directors and E.W. Murray are to do the right thing. Show our great American Flag the proper respect it deserves.
