Linda Fischer Hopkins, a social worker at The Valerie Fund Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, recently won a Patient Service Award from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The West Allenhurst resident won the award for her dedication to pediatric oncology.
A pediatric social worker at Monmouth since 1995, Hopkins specializes in oncology services. Prior to joining the center, she was a private consultant and sexual abuse prevention educator at the Monmouth County Sexual Abuse Treatment and Prevention Program, Red Bank.
Monmouth clinical information systems instructor Indie Cooper-Guzman and director of education Cynthia Marvulli recently took first place at the International Nursing Computer and Technology Conference. The nurses won the Best Poster Award for "E" Links, a program to provide Monmouth nurses with easy and effective use of Web-based resources while working on a patient unit.
The hospital’s cystic fibrosis center recently received a $45,000 grant from OceanFirst Foundation, Toms River, for its pulmonary function testing program. The contribution will be used to cover the cost of specialized training for the center’s staff on the new procedure to assess lung function in infants and toddlers.
Through a grant from Arthur and Dorothy Greenbaum, West End section of Long Branch, Monmouth recently acquired a Bravo pH monitoring system to perform computerized monitoring of a patient’s pH level without the use of a catheter and little disruption in daily activities. The system will be used to diagnose gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Monmouth recently added positron emission tomography (PET) whole-body imaging, which uses molecular images of the body’s functions to search for cancer. The diagnostic accuracy of PET is 8-43 percent higher than conventional radiological procedures and is also useful for presurgical assessments and identification of distant metastases.
