Joseph Vincent Bealkowski Sr.

   Joseph V. "Joe" Bealkowski Sr., 82, of Smithsburg, Md., died June 9 at his residence.
   Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Bealkowski resided in Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Germany and the United States, but considered Hopewell his home.
   He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II as an aircraft engine mechanic and was appointed a flight officer in 1945. He served as a flight engineer on the B-29 bomber. Decorations included the American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
   He went into the civil service, working in the personnel training and management career field for the U.S. Army. He retired in 1978 after 34 years of service. He worked another 13 years for the U.S. government as a wage analyst, retiring for good in 1993.
   Preceded in death by his parents John and Frances Bealkowski, his wife Yukiko; and brothers William, Frank, Alexander, Edward, Bruno and Zigmund, he is survived by a son Joseph Jr., Lt. Col. USAF; his wife Dana of Smithsburg, Md.; a brother Stanley and wife Machiko of Sunnyvale, Calif.; sister Jean Latterman and husband Max of Hopewell; grandchildren April and husband Clint, Lacey and husband Scott, and Amber; great-grandchildren Jamey, Joshua, Jonus, Autumn and Courtney; nieces and nephews and many friends.
   A memorial Mass will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Alphonsus Church, 54 E. Prospect St, Hopewell.
   Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery, Hopewell.
