Seniors eligible for tax break

LAKEWOOD — Municipal officials have announced that the township will continue to provide assistance to eligible resident seniors in filing applications for the 2003 Property Tax Reimbursement, now that the New Jersey Division of Taxation has announced a filing extension to Aug. 2.

The Property Tax Reimbursement program reimburses eligible seniors and disabled persons for property tax increases. Under the program, those eligible are reimbursed by the state for the difference between the amount of local property taxes paid in the "base year" (the year they became eligible and first filed for the program) and the amount of property taxes paid for the reimbursement year.

Homeowners, 65 and older, who have lived in their current home at least three years, and have been New Jersey residents for at least the past 10 years and who meet certain income limits may qualify for the reimbursement. Applicants for the 2003 reimbursement must have total income for 2002 of under $39,475 for single applicants and $48,404 combined income for married couples; and total income for 2003 of under $40,028 for single applicants and $49,082 for married couples.
