Obituaries John H. Wellman

Mr. Wellman, 58, of Long Branch died June 17 at home. He resided in Rumson before moving to Long Branch 20 years ago. He was employed at West-Ward Pharmaceutical Corp., Eatontown, for several years. Mr. Wellman was employed with Teamsters Local No. 815, Englewood Cliffs. He was a member of the New Jersey National Guard. He was predeceased by his parents, Lt. Col. Walter and Barbara Bylund Wellman. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Alicia and Kevin Murphy of Shrewsbury; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Rich of Pennsylvania, and Chris and Bob Anttonen of Rumson; two grandchildren; and two nephews and nieces. A memorial Mass will be offered June 25 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, is in charge of arrangements.

Michael J. Attardi

Mr. Attardi, 70, died June 17 at the Hospice Center at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Neptune, he resided in Long Branch the past 68 years. Mr. Attardi served with the U.S. Army from 1954-56 and was honored with four medals as a military policeman. He attended Valley Forge Military Academy, where he was named to the All-America Football Team in 1954. He was also elected to the Long Branch Athletic Hall of Fame for football in 1984. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Frances "Snooky" Tortoretti Attardi; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael D. and Colleen Cole-Hatchard Attardi of Middletown; two daughters and one son-in-law, Michelle and Dr. James Fay of Manasquan, and Francine Attardi of Long Branch; two sisters, Anne Ducey of Long Branch and Gloria Sorrentino of West Long Branch; two grandchildren; a sister-in-law; and two brothers-in-law. Interment with military honors took place at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arnytown. Arrangements were by Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch.Brian John O’Brien

Mr. O’Brien, 70, of Ocean Township died June 17 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Queens, N.Y., he resided in the Lincroft section of Middletown before moving to Ocean Township three years ago. Mr. O’Brien was a consultant psychologist for numerous local firms, and owned and operated his own practice in Lincroft. Prior to that, he was director of counseling at Seton Hall University, East Orange. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He coached Lincroft Little League and enjoyed golf. Mr. O’Brien was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Mary Patricia McCarthy O’Brien, in 2000. He is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, John B. and Katie O’Brien of West Long Branch, and James D. O’Brien of Hyattsville, Md.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary K. and Keith Brown of Reading, Conn., and Susan M. and Jeff Paley of Howell; a brother, the Rev. Eugene O’Brien, S.J.; a sister, Maureen O’Brien, O.P.; and nine grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church, Lincroft. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements. Charles V. Carroll Jr.

Mr. Carroll, 77, of Middletown died June 16 at home. He resided in the Middletown area most of his life. He was a self-employed certified public accountant. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a charter member of the Middletown Elks, Middletown Lions Club, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179, Port Monmouth section of Middletown. He was also an ex-township clerk in Middletown, and former member of the Township Committee. He was predeceased by a brother, James Carroll. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Adrienne Herr Carroll; a daughter, Kelly Ann Carroll of Middletown; three sons, Kevin Sean Carroll and Charles John Carroll, both Middletown, and John Christopher Carroll of Red Bank; and a sister, Patricia Schweizer of Middletown. Mrs. Chrostowski, 70, of Freehold died June 12 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had resided there before moving to Freehold seven years ago. She was a food service manager for the New York City Public Schools, retiring in 1996. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold; a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Columbiettes of Knights of Columbus Council No. 293; and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5806 Auxiliary, all of Brooklyn, N.Y. Mrs. Chrostowski was predeceased in 1994 by her husband, Michael A. Chrostowski. Surviving are a son, Michael F. Chrostowski of Monroe, N.Y.; a daughter, Ann Marie Samojedny of Jacksonville, Fla.; five grandchildren; a niece, Kathleen Damore of Freehold; two nephews, Kevin Madigan of Shrewsbury and John Madigan of Brooklyn; two great-nieces; and three great-nephews. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, N.Y. Elizabeth "Betty" G. Strong

Mrs. Strong, 75, of Middletown died June 7 at home. Born in Red Bank, she resided in the Leonardo section of Middletown prior to mov­ing to Shadow Lake Village, Middletown, 14 years ago. She was a retired medical reception­ist at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She volunteered at the Food Pantry, Atlantic Highlands, and was a member of the Nifty Fifty Club at Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, William H. Strong Sr. in 1997. She is survived by two sons, Robert Strong and William H. Strong Jr., both of Long Branch; a daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and David Carhart of Leonardo; a sister, Margaret Lang of Fair Haven; a brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Vivian Scoles of Tinton Falls; a nephew; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Interment was at Fair View Ceme­tery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Mrs. DePietro, 89, of Red Bank died June 17 at Gateway Care Center, Eatontown. She was a retired employee of The Amalgamated Clothes Union, where she as employed more than 25 years. She enjoyed time with her family, cooking, travel and the Yankees. She was predeceased by her husband, Carmine DePietro, in 1975; and four brothers, Phil, Tony, Frank and Joe Mazza. She is survived by two sisters, Sue DeFalco of Linden and Jenny Bruno of Middletown; two daughters, Marguerite Welsh of Eatontown and Arlene DePietro of the Wayside section of Ocean Township; a son, Anthony DePietro of Shrewsbury Township; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.

Mary T. Denniston

Mrs. Denniston, 72, of Sayreville died June 13 at St. Barnabas Hospice at Monmouth Med­ical Center, Long Branch. Born in Kearny, she lived in Sayreville for 52 years. She was an administrative assistant for Liz Claiborne Inc. She was the co-founder of the East Coast Judges Guild, and for many years was an adjudicator for Mid Atlantic Indoor Network (MAIN), Drum Corps International, Drum Corps Associates, Winter Guard International, Youth Education in the Arts, Tournament of Bands, and the National Judges Association. She was known for her dedication to color guard, marching band and drum corps activities for over 45 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Calvin R. Denniston; her parents, Michael and Mary McCart, and her brother, William McCart. She is survived by her daughter, Beverly Maniscalco; three grandchildren, Calvin, Dedrick and Emily Krzywiec, all of Eatontown; her sister, Anne, and brother-in-law, Frank Keim, of Alexandria, Va.; and four nephews. A funeral service was held at Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Victories Church, Sayreville. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery, Sayreville.
