RUMSON — At the Borough Council meeting on July 1, an ordinance was introduced to allocate $9,500 to hire an architect to plan for additions and renovations to borough hall.

The borough is looking to hire Robert Gorski of Gorski Waldron Architects of Rumson. Gorski also did the recent renovations on borough police headquarters and the most recent addition to Deane-Porter School.

Gorski is being brought in to do a preliminary sketch of what can be done to maximize the space within borough hall and assess what additions are needed.

According to J. Gary Sammon, borough clerk and administrator, "The borough is looking to remodel and add on, but the add-ons won’t be very big."

Sammon said it is important to keep the integrity of the building, but since the last renovation in 1965, when police headquarters moved to Center Street, more office and storage space is needed to fit the borough’s needs.

The latest addition to the building was done in 1997, when the Municipal Court was added onto the back. That room is used for multiple purposes, including the council meetings.

"We love the building," said Sammon. "It is strong."

Sammon said the building’s electrical system needs an upgrade and the heating and ventilation system will be looked at in the older part of the building, but the furnace is still in good shape.

According to Sammon, the preliminary computerized sketches should be completed a month after the ordinance is passed.
