Patrol officers hit streets via bicycle

JAMESBURG After a successful job patrolling the July 4 crowd at Manalapan Lake on bicycle, the Jamesburg Police Department has decided to once again take to the streets.
Starting in August, borough residents could see an increase in patrols during the weekends, as officers riding bicycles will cruise the borough.
"It’s a good idea, this way residents see the police more and it is especially a good idea in a town that is not very big," Councilwoman and Police Commissioner Barbara Carpenter said.
The program should start in August, Ms. Carpenter said, when the borough will have enough officers to patrol both in cars and on bicycle.
"We want to make sure we have enough officers to have two in patrol cars and two on bike," Ms. Carpenter said. "With it being summer and having officers on vacation it will not start until August."
Mayor Tony LaMantia said the bike officers would benefit the borough and that many officers are trained and certified for that type of duty.
"Almost all of our officers are trained for bike duty, they need to be certified," Mayor LaMantia said.
