Hazlet 10s earn a trio of titles

The Hazlet 10-year-old girls softball all-star team completed its campaign with a 21-5 record and three tournament championships.

Coach Scott Feirstein’s team started the summer slowly, going 2-2 in its first tourney, which was held in Middletown. Hazlet quickly recovered to capture the Babe Ruth District 1 crown. Hazlet went undefeated in the four District 1 contests, allowing just two runs along the way.

Next up was the Babe Ruth State Championships, held in Sparta. After losing a 3-1 decision against Rockaway in the opener, Hazlet rebounded to edge Fair Haven, 10-6, before being eliminated by Lenape, 2-0.

The team then competed in the Sayreville AA Tournament, again going undefeated. Pitcher Bobbie Boehler hurled a no-hitter against Union Beach, striking out 15 in the process. Hazlet took the crown with a 3-1 triumph over Edison in the final.

Feirstein’s squad then reached the finals of the rain-shortened East Brunswick Tournament, before bowing to the host team. Hazlet capped the summer by hosting and winning its own tournament, posting a 5-0 record to take the crown.

Boehler and Christina Faccas provided Hazlet with excellent pitching, while Tiffany Dahlquist, Briana Murphy, Jennifer Noble and Jamie VanMeerbeeke were among the top hitters.

Other members of the Hazlet team include: Erin Byrne, Shannon Costello, Lauren Dubinin, Lindsey Feirstein, Courtney Holder, Dana Ricca, Carly Schultz and Astrid Vasquez. Kevin Boehler, Tim Murphy and Tom Schultz assisted Feirstein.
