$1M grant will be used
to build park-and-ride
State Sen. Robert Singer, who is a member of the Lakewood Township Committee, announced at the Aug. 5 meeting of the committee that a $1 million grant will be used to construct a park-and-ride facility at FirstEnergy Park. A percentage of the $1 million will also be used for the enlargement of the stadium parking lot, said Singer.
FirstEnergy Park is home to the Lakewood BlueClaws, a Class A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. The stadium is at the corner of New Hampshire Avenue and Cedar Bridge Avenue (Route 528).
According to Singer, the Lakewood Development Corporation (LDC) applied for a grant from the Casino Reinvest-ment Authority three years ago when the stadium was built. The LDC oversees the township’s Urban Enterprise Zone, where the stadium is located. Singer said the Casino Reinvestment Authority provides grants or loans for the improvement of infrastructure and for use by nonprofit organizations.
"It’s a very positive thing," he said. "Since the project is being built without taxpayer dollars, the residents of Lakewood are the beneficiaries of our efforts. Our work has been well rewarded."
