Cooperation with Trenton, Ewing will be needed.
We hear all-too-frequent stories of one town developing right on its border without the consultation and care for its neighbors. Lawrence Township has the opportunity to share in an initiative that would buck that trend.
Last week, we reported on a presentation by the Urban Land Institute on the area where Lawrence, Ewing Township and the City of Trenton meet. The ULI calls for redevelopment there, consisting of new housing, retail, office and warehouse space.
With the township already embarking on a well-received redevelopment plan along Brunswick Pike, the focus recommended by the ULI would be a welcome complement to that effort. Of course, the ULI suggestions are merely a starting point. Lawrence, Ewing and Trenton would have to come up with a more concrete wishlist.
But for any border-crossing redevelopment to be effective, it will take a coordinated effort from all the participants. We urge Lawrence officials to cooperate with their neighbors to that effect.
