A few weeks ago, the Jamesburg Presbyterian Church Deacon’s Food Pantry was nearly forced to close its doors.
Bare shelves and a growing number of people in need 55 families, 12 single mothers, 15 seniors and 10 or so walk-ins at last count meant that if donations didn’t start coming in, the pantry might close by the end of August.
But thanks to a caring community, tragedy has been averted. According to pantry director Susan Schneider-Baker, food drives have been organized and donations of groceries, baby items and personal hygiene products have started to come in.
It is a testament to the type of people who live in the area that help was given so quickly and so freely.
But as with all pantries, more help is needed, especially over the next few months. With Thanksgiving, Christmas and cold weather setting in, food drives and donations will be needed more than ever. Food, diapers, soap, toilet paper, shampoo and other items are always welcome.
And, judging from recent events, we’re sure that Jamesburg will come up big.
Donations can be made by calling the Jamesburg Presbyterian Church, 177 Gatzmer Ave., at (732) 521-1711, Monday through Friday. Packages can be dropped off at the church or the church can make arrangements to receive donations.
