OCEAN TOWNSHIP — The Ocean Township Police Department is looking for information on two scam artists.
On Aug. 4, an unidentified 68-year-old Asbury Park woman was in a parking lot on Sunset Avenue at approximately 9:30 a.m. when she fell victim to a scam, according to Detective Sgt. Jeffrey Layton.
The victim told police officers that she was approached by a black heavy-set female in her early 60s who was wearing a tan dress and a gray straw hat. The two engaged in a conversation when a black male approached them, according to police reports.
The victim said the man was about 6 feet tall and in his late 50s and was wearing dark pants, a tan shirt with green floral print and a baseball cap.
The victim said the male showed the two women an envelope filled with a large amount of cash that he said he found.
The male suspect told the women that there were many $1,000 bills in the envelope. He asked if the women would help him cash the big bills for smaller bills and they could split the findings in the envelope.
The victim said the plan was for her to go to Value City, where the male said he was an employee, and his boss would help break the bills, after she went to the bank to get small bills.
The victim along with the black female went to Provident Bank in the Middlebrook Shopping Center on Route 35 and the victim withdrew over $1,000 in small bills.
The three individuals met up and the victim gave the male her money. She said she was then told to enter Value City to find the male’s boss and bring him out to the parking lot, according to Layton. The accused male would then return the money she gave him and give her a share of the found money.
The victim went inside Value City and saw nobody, according to Layton.
When she returned to the parking lot, the two accused individuals were no longer there, according to reports.
"We are thoroughly investigating the case," Layton said.
The Ocean Township Police Department is asking that anyone with information on the two scam artists to call the police department at (732) 531-1800.
