The Jersey Shore Thunder U10 Baseball Club won the USABL Championship on Sunday, defeating the Middletown Warriors by a score of 2-1. The Thunder got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Ryan Grover was the star of the day, making several key catches in center field. In addition, Grover collected two hits and stole home for the Thunder’s first run. Joe Keane, Troy Baldwin and Jimmy Dengler combined for a five-hitter. Dengler picked up his second save in two days with a game-ending strikeout, leaving the tying run on second base. To advance to the championship game, the team beat Wall in dramatic fashion on Saturday, 5-4. Steller defense by third baseman David Rosone, shortstop Blake Brandon and catcher Chris Lorenz throughout the playoffs kept the Thunder in every game. The players are Blake Brandon, Charlie Olman, Chris Lorenz, Collin Trettel, David Rosone, Frankie Juliano, Jimmy Dengler, Jimmy Schinnick, Joe Keane, Ryan Grover, Troy Baldwin, Willie Dengler and Zachery Marcin.
The following are results from the Children’s Sailing Racing Championship Series at the Shrewsbury Sailing Club in Oceanport. There were 23 participants in the July 11 competition.
In the Opti Gold Fleet, Jack Swikart won race one, followed by Andrew Tamblyn, Dan Ricker, Michael Wodka and Kevin Guadangno. Tamblyn won race two, followed by Ricker, Jessica Gruskos, Wikart and Wodka.
In the Opti Silver Fleet, Connor Swikart won race one, followed by Carolyn Garth, Alix Zwieg, Paul Clauss and Kendall Van Winkle. Clauss won race two, followed by Garth, Zwieg, Swikart and Van Winkle.
The Fair Haven Hurricanes, a 13U team, recently returned from Oneonta College in New York, where they participated in the Cooperstown Baseball World Tournament. In the championship game, the Hurricanes beat the undefeated Carolina Bullets, the reigning South Caroline 13U AAU state champs.
Leading hitters for the Hurricanes during the tournament were Todd Juliano (.391), Colin Lang (.391), Chris Landers (.375) and Taylor Brown (.360). Pitcher Kevin Marinko was 3-0, while other contributing pitchers were John Benedict and Rob Corsi. Among the other players who played well throughout the tournament were Kevin Graf, John O’Keefe, Michael Richards and Tom Robinson. This year’s coaches were Jim Graf, Bill Robinson and Dave Corsi. Paul Campanella previously coached the team and was instrumental in assembling this championship squad.
The Green and Gold Basketball Coaches Clinic will be held at Red Bank Catholic on Oct. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost per coach is $40 (includes lunch at the Outback Steakhouse). All new and experienced AAU, grammar/middle school, recreation and church youth basketball coaches who are looking for a proved approach to teaching winning basketball philosophy, fundamentals and drills to their team are invited to attend.
