Navy Chief Warrant Officer Paul Lang, a 1980 graduate of Red Bank Catholic High School, has graduated from the Prospective Engineering Officer Steam Chief Engineer course at Surface Warfare Officer School, Newport, R.I. During the five-week course, Lang was given detailed instruction on maintenance requirements, inspections, and program management. He also received firefighting, electrical, and lab training, totaling more than 240 hours of instruction. Students also completed three practical work exercises, which emphasized these concepts.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Enrique Abreu, son of Paul Abreu of Oceanport, recently graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. During the six weeks of training, Abreu studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. Airmen completing basic training also earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Army National Guard Major Gerard M. Garvey was recently mobilized, activated and deployed to Kosovo as a member of the U.S. Army contingent serving as part of the Multinational Brigade-East. Garvey will be assigned to Task Force Falcon at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo. The soldiers are part of a rotating NATO-U.S. task force which helps support the continuing Kosovo Peacekeeping Force (KFOR) mission after the crisis in Kosovo ceased in 1999. The Kosovo Force helps maintain a safe and secure environment in the province, provides a security presence in villages, assists in resolving disputes and works with international aid agencies to provide support for communities. The United States is one of 36 countries that participates in the NATO peacekeeping mission. A deputy chief of staff with 14 years’ military service, Garvey is a 1986 graduate of Monmouth Regional High School, Tinton Falls, and received a bachelor’s degree in 1990 from Seton Hall University, South Orange. He is the son of Carol A. and Eugene G. Garvey of Tinton Falls.

Marine Corps Cpl. William J. Boyington and more than 2,000 Marines and sailors assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), recently began the process of ensuring security and stability in the central Iraqi province of Northern Babil. Operating from Forward Operating Base Kalsu, the unit first established rapport with its neighbors and let them know they are prepared to help them in any way. The Marines stopped to offer residents water and talked about living conditions and how the Marines could help. The Forward Operating Base provides security against insurgents and anti-coalition militia for hundreds of Marines in Boyington’s unit. Boyington is a 1989 graduate of Ocean Township High School. He is the son of Ella E. Boyington of Tinton Falls and William D. Boyington of the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township.

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Brendan J. Duffy, and more than 2,200 Marines and Sailors assigned to the 22nd MEU recently concluded operations in Afghanistan and are preparing to return to the home base of Camp Lejuene, N.C., after a routine scheduled deployment. Duffy’s unit spent three months conducting operations in support of the global war on terrorism. A 2001 graduate of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, Rumson, Duffy is the son of Shari J. and James O. Duffy of Rumson. He joined the Marine Corps in September 2002.
