Program will focus on 18th-century dentistry

Monmouth Battlefield State Park’s Craig House, Freehold Township, will host a program on 18th-century dentistry Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.

Marjy Wienkop, a Revolutionary War re-enactor and one of only a few historians specializing in 18th-century dentistry, will discuss what dentistry was like in America during the Age of Enlightenment, and will show visitors some of the instruments and medicines that were used in that time period.

Wienkop is the director of the Medical Department of the Continental Line. She was an instructor in metalworking at the Johnson Atelier, Mercerville, for many years and has recreated nearly all of her surgical and dental instruments. The medicines she carries are the real thing and not colored powders and liquids.

The program is free of charge. The Craig House is located on Route 9 south at Schibanoff Road. Further information is available at Monmouth Battlefield State Park, (732) 462-9616.
