The Monroe Township Hoops Association will hold tryouts for its 2004-05 Travel Basketball Season. The travel season extends from October until March. Tryouts will be held at the Monroe Recreation Center.

Participating boys teams include: 12 years old and under (born between 8/1/91 and 7/31/92) will hold tryouts Oct. 21 from 7:30-9 p.m. and Oct. 23 from 1-3 p.m.; 10 years old and under (born between 8/1/93 and 7/31/94), Oct. 21 from 6-7:30 p.m. and Oct. 24 from 7-9 p.m.; 9 years old & under (born between 8/1/94 and 7/31/95), Oct. 22 from 7:30-9 p.m. and Oct. 24 from 5-7 p.m.; 8 years old & under (born between 8/1/95 and 7/31/96) November workouts to be announced. The boys 8-year-old program is an instructional program. Notifications will go out in November.

Girls teams include: 9 years old & under (born between 8/1/94 and 7/31/95) November workouts to be announced. The girls 9-year-old program is an instructional program. Notifications will go out in November.

The age requirement cut-off date for boys and girls teams is Aug. 1.

All candidates must be Monroe Township residents and attend at least one scheduled tryout session. All candidates must bring a copy of his/her birth certificate.

Players selected for a team will be responsible for paying a registration fee, which covers entrance fees for league and tournament play, as well as referee and scorekeeper expenses.

Players and their parents selected for a team are expected to participate in MTHA’s travel fund-raising activities.

The following are the results of the Tamarack Women’s Golf Association 18 Hole Group’s Sept. 14 and Oct. 5 events — little ringer, 100 percent handicap. In flight A, Ann Lin came in first with a 74, followed by Lelia Nelson with a 91 and Muriel Feniello with an 84 (mc). In flight B, first place went to Claudia Homoki with a 67, followed by Agnes Olsson with a 67 (mc) and Tres Wist with a 70. Flight C’s winner was Perry Pernice with a 61, followed by Joan March with a 65 and Terry Massaro with an 80.

The East Brunswick Cobras boys U8 soccer team won its first game of the season, defeating NASA United by a thrilling 3-2 final score. Yannick Ntone Kouo scored two goals and Grady Gimbel tallied another as the Cobras held on for the win over a determined United squad who made a strong second-half offensive push. The Cobra defense — featuring strong play from Jake Stolzenberg, Dylan Serra, John McHenry, Quinn Work, Alex Wojcik and Andrew Berger — turned away repeated scoring opportunities while distributing key passes to the hustling midfielders Michael Botzenhart and Ryan Josephson. The East Brunswick goaltending duo of Mark Lamonica and Michael Zuckerman made several impressive saves, including some from point blank range. The Cobras were missing talented player Aiden Werder for the game but still pulled together as a team to earn the exciting victory.

The Monroe Xtreme U13 boys soccer team exploded for four goals after falling behind 1-0 to the Bridgewater Fire. Anthony Torres scored his third goal in two games for the equalizer, getting a nice assist from Francis Laferriere. It stayed 1-1 for a while, until Eric Palisay broke the tie with a great goal from a perfect pass from Timmy Brix. It was 2-1 at the half. The Xtreme came out with fire in their eyes, getting a quick goal from Timmy Brix on a great corner kick from Tito Mattos, making it 3-1, Monroe was rolling along. The midfield of Ryan Miller, Tim Gandy, Adam Peterson and Shane Santiagodid did their best to keep possession of the ball. That’s when Eric Paone came up with the final goal, making it 4-1 for the final. Harry Landy had another strong game at the forward position. The defense held up after allowing an early goal, with the tight play of John Dougherty, Kevin LeBrun and Jonathon Roman in the net.

East Brunswick High School’s cross country star Greg Bull set a new course record on Tuesday in leading the Bears to a 20-36 win over South Brunswick. Bull toured the 3.1-mile course in East Brunswick in 15:55.8, as the Bears improved to 4-0 on the dual meet season.

The following are the results of the Tamarack Women’s Nine-Hole Golf Association’s Sept. 30 outing — stroke play, full handicap. Barbara Chudkowski won the A Flight with a 39, followed by Joan Hoskins (40), Sandi Sulam (41) and Ruth Rosenberg (43). Abbey Lorber won the B Flight with a 36, followed by Gerry Hurley (40), Ronnie Bohn (42) and Terri MacAllister (44). Doris Colgrove won the C Flight with a 39, followed by Joy Goldstein (40) and Madelyne DiMaria (41). Marge Widder had fewest putts with 14.

Monroe Township Roller Hockey registration is now open for the fall season. Register online at www.mtrhl.org. The fee is $35, with a $25 work bond. The league is for boys and girls ages 6-16. Make checks payable to Monroe Twp. Roller Hockey. Coach will collect payment prior to first game. Games are played Sundays and Wednesdays from Nov. 7 to Jan. 12 All players will be evaluated. Registration is being accepted for the Old Bridge winter ice hockey youth instructional program, sponsored by the township Department of Parks, Recreation & Social Services. The program will be held on Sunday evenings, beginning Oct. 10, at the Old Bridge Sports Arena. Youngsters will be instructed on the fundamentals of hockey, including stick-handling, passing and shooting. Participants are required to wear full equipment. The sessions are broken into two age groups: 5-8 years old and 9-13. The 5-8 group runs from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the older group runs from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $250 for Old Bridge residents and $300 for nonresidents.
