Residents’ support made building project a reality

This is an open letter to the borough of Sayreville community members.

The recent dedication ceremony for the Sayreville Upper Elementary School (UES) represented a significant highlight for our school system. Nearly 700 parents and community members took the opportunity to tour our first-class facility, which is equal to the best in the state. We are proud that the school opened on time and was constructed within the approved budget.

It has been a real joy to visit the school while it is in session and witness firsthand the excitement of the students and staff. A beautiful building has become a vibrant school filled with the visible evidence of student learning, whether it is observing a lesson, reading student work posted in the hallways or seeing student artwork in display cases.

We would like to thank the community for its support of this building project. It is an important investment in our children and our community. With the opening of the UES, we have resolved overcrowding conditions in the middle school and all four elementary schools.

There is one last step to be taken, which is to address the critical needs of Sayreville War Memorial High School. With the continued construction of new homes in the borough and the large number of younger children moving up through the grades, the high school is getting increasingly crowded. Also, the school is more than 40 years old and needs a great deal of renovation.

The Board of Education will hold a referendum in April. It is our hope that today’s fourth- and fifth-grade students will have the opportunity to attend a high school that is the equal of the new UES.

Once again, we appreciate your support.
