Jazz Passengers give new take on cult film

Retro 3-D glasses will be standard issue Oct. 23 when The Count Basie Theatre presents “The Creature From the Black Lagoon.”

The 1950s cult classic will get an update with a reworked soundtrack featuring live music by the Jazz Passengers.

The seven-piece group has added outrageous new dialogue and sound effects that add hilarity to the original film’s plot about a scientific expedition to a remote part of the Amazon River where it encounters a prehistoric semi-amphibious gill-man.

Creating new scores for vintage films is a growing trend being popularized by the Jazz Passengers. When the group presented their reworked version of the classic monster film in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park in 2003, more than 6,000 people attended.

Tickets for the 1 p.m. screening are $18 and $15 and can be reserved by calling the box office at (732) 224-8778 ext. 326.
