Ernest M. DeLeo, 80, of Monroe, formerly of Parlin, died Sunday, Oct. 17, at his home.
Born in West New York, he resided in Parlin before moving to Monroe in 1985.He was a 1951 graduate of Citadel College in Charleston, S.C., with a degree in engineering. Before his retirement 21 years ago, he was employed as head engineer at U.S. Metals in Carteret, where he worked for many years. Mr. DeLeo was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 1288th Engineer Combat Battalion. He was a member of Sayerville Knights of Columbus Council 2061 and its 4th Degree Assembly. Mr. DeLeo was a communicant of Nativity of Our Lord R.C. Church in Monroe and a former communicant of Our Lady of Victories R.C. in Sayerville, where he served as eucharistic minister.
His wife, Margie J. Rhodes DeLeo, died Aug. 18, 2003. His sister, Evelyn Trapp, also is deceased. He is survived by his children, Ernest Michael DeLeo and his wife, Patricia, of South Amboy; his grandchildren, Neal and his wife, Josie, Lauren, Paul, Aubrey, Stephen, Jacqueline, Matthew and his wife, Jennifer, and Earl; and his great-grandchildren, Kasi, Rachel and Trey.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, 15 Cherry Lane, Parlin. Services were followed by a Mass at Nativity of Our Lord R.C. Church in Monroe, and a burial at New Calvary Cemetery, Parlin. The following groups also held services at the funeral home on Tuesday, Oct. 19: the Sayerville Knights of Columbus Council 2061 4th Degree and members of the Our Lady of Victories Council 2061.
