Jewish film festival to be held Nov. 4-14

The fifth annual New Jersey Jewish Film Festival will be held Nov. 4-14 at the Regal Cinema in North Brunswick.

Among the offerings are a film about the pressures of Israeli military life, the search for the identity of a suicide bombing victim, and a son’s quest to uncover the mysterious past of his famous father.

Presented by the Allen and Joan Bildner Center for the Study of Jewish Life, part of Rutgers University, the festival presents critically acclaimed, award-winning dramatic and documentary films from the United States, Argentina, Britain and Israel. It also features talks by producers, directors and experts on Jewish life and Israeli culture. All films are in English or have English subtitles.

A mini Israeli Film Festival will be held Nov. 9-11 featuring a pre-film talk on Israeli cinema and three award-wining films: “Yossi and Jagger,” “No. 17” and “Broken Wings.” Directors Deborah Dickson and Faye Lederman will participate in a “Women Filmmakers Forum” on Nov. 11, at which their films “Ruthie & Connie: Every Room in the House” and “A Good Uplift” will be shown.

The festival will open at 6 p.m. Nov. 4 with a reception and live music followed by the screening of “Wondrous Oblivion,” about a working-class Jewish family in London during the 1960s. The festival will close at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 with “My Architect: A Son’s Journey,” which explores the legacy of noted architect Louis Kahn from his son’s perspective.

Prices are $9 for general admission, and $6 for students and seniors. Tickets for the opening and closing night receptions are $18. The cinema is at 2399 Route 1 south, North Brunswick. Tickets may be obtained from
