ALLENTOWN — Two Republican candidates, an incumbent and a newcomer, are running unopposed for the two available three-year Borough Council seats.
The remaining council members are also Republicans.
Incumbent David Strobino is running unopposed to keep his seat, while Daniel Zorovich, 70, is running for the seat currently held by Councilman Art West.
A 30-year resident, Zorovich is married and has three grown children, as well as three grandchildren. He has served on the Environmental Commission and has also been a soccer coach.
In Zorovich’s view, the most important issues facing the borough are traffic and high property taxes.
“Solutions are not easy,” he said. “The borough portion of the tax is approximately 28 percent. Most of the rest is for education and we have very little control over it.
“Allentown has no more space for growth,” Zorovich continued. “All the growth is happening around our borders, and we also have little control over its spread.”
Zorovich added that keeping expenses low is a continuous challenge, and that he will continue to seek grants for different organizations and projects.
“We will aggressively look for creative ways to keep costs down,” he said.
Zorovich believes that the easterly bypass has not significantly improved the traffic through Allentown, and thinks that the westerly bypass is necessary in order to relieve the bottleneck in town during rush hour.
As for the proposed new middle school, “This is an issue for the Board of Education to resolve,” he said. “I would challenge their demographics data, and if it is reliable, the school should be built.”
The Examiner was unable to interview Strobino.
Residents in District 1 can vote Nov. 2 at Allentown High School, while residents in District 2 can cast their ballots at the Allentown Methodist Church on Church Street. The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Sample ballots were mailed to all registered voters seven days before the election.
