HEA community outreach starts with safety event

If a house looks too spooky, don’t go there. And make sure mom and dad check your candy before you eat any.
Woodfern and Woods Road elementary school students learned these and other Halloween safety tips from costumed teachers and Hillsborough police officers at a Boro Kid Zone event sponsored by the Hillsborough Education Association (HEA) this week.
"We want to target things to improve the community … and bring the idea of safety to kids," said Barbara Parker, president of the HEA.
Fran Brzycki of Stoll Drive brought her eight-year-old son and two of his friends to Kid Zone.
"I brought them to have fun and to learn about trick-or-treating in a safe environment," she said while her son was busy eating ice cream with his classmates.
The Halloween safety night was one of several community events the HEA plans to fund with a $27,000 "Pride Grant" from the New Jersey Education Association.
"The relationship with parents and the school are important, and you get to see a different side of the teachers," Ms. Brzycki said.
At 6 p.m. today (Thursday), the HEA will host another Halloween safety session for students from Hillsborough and Triangle Elementary Schools.
