Oct. 28, 6:15 p.m.: O, Hunter, just when we needed you

A screed from the master of screeds. Hunter S. Thompson on the 2004 election.

I’ve really missed Hunter S. Thompson. I’ve always thought that his combination of bravado and wit would be a perfect fit for this year’s ugly mess of an election.
So, just in time, here he is in the Independent (U.K.), in rambling, hallucinatory form. Not as good as his earliest work — "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 1972" remains my favorite political book (what exactly does that say about me?). But still a worthy screed from the indomitable master.
