Yasmeen Afzal, of the New Egypt section of Plumsted, has been named a dean’s scholar at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y., where she is enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences. Dean’s scholarships, which are awarded to entering first-year and transfer students, recognize outstanding academic achievement. In addition to having strong academic credentials in high school, candidates must be active in extracurricular and community activities and must also demonstrate good character and citizenship. Afzal received the university’s Dr. Raymond S. Wilson Scholarship.

Randy Heubel, of Jackson, has been named a chancellor’s scholar at Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y., where he is an aerospace engineering major enrolled in the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science. Chancellor’s scholarships recognize outstanding academic achievement and are awarded to entering first-year and transfer students. Candidates must have strong academic credentials in high school, be active in extracurricular and community activities, and also demonstrate good character and citizenship.

Janet Levine, of Howell, has been named a peer facilitator for the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse (N.Y.) University for the 2004-05 academic year. In cooperation with faculty and staff, student peer facilitators help first-year students with the academic, social, cultural and emotional transition from high school to college. Levine is a sophomore majoring in marketing management.

Shannon Michelle Galary, of Howell, has graduated from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural development. A 2000 graduate of Howell High School, she is enrolled at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark, in a master of science degree program in environmental policy studies.

Kelli Zicha, of Jackson, has earned recognition as a dean’s scholar for the 2003-04 year at Georgian Court University, Lakewood, where she recently began her senior year. A psychology/elementary education major, she is pursuing a career as an educator.
