The Shrewsbury Gymnastics Level C Team competed at the Jersey Optional Girls Association (JOGA) meet held at Jonas Gymnastics in Marlboro on November 14. In the 8-9 age group, Bailey Bestle (West Long Branch) placed second on vault with a score of 7.9; third on uneven bars with a score of 5.3; second on balance beam with a score of 6.95. She placed third in the all-around with a score of 27.15. Amy Stevens (River Plaza) placed first on balance beam with a score of 7.05. Delanie Freund placed fourth on balance beam with a score of 6.65.
In the 10-11 age group, Jessica Doscher (Little Silver) placed eighth on vault with a score of 8.05 and 12th on uneven bars with a 4.9.
In the 12-13 age group, Erin Hussey (River Plaza) place third on vault with a score of 8.35; second on uneven bars with a score of 7.0; fourth on balance beam with a score of 7.7; and fourth on floor with a score of 7.4. She won the all-around with a score of 30.45. Meryll Newman (Little Silver) placed seventh on balance beam with a score of 7.55. Christine Levantino (Fair Haven) competed with distinction.
A Seniors vs. Faculty charity basketball game at the Middletown North bubble will be held on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. All proceeds of this event will be donated to the Joe Leone Memorial Scholarship Fund at Middletown North. Leone was killed in an automobile accident last July. He was a member of the 2002 CJ Group IV state championship team at North, and went on to star at Brookdale Community College the next two years. He was preparing to leave in August for his first year at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina, where he was walking on to the Division I basketball team. Tickets to the game will be $5.
