EDITORIAL Ways to reach out and help the community.
It’s the holiday season and along with long lines at retail stores and seasonal decorations going up everywhere, it’s also a time when numerous organizations reach out to the public for charitable help.
So far, area residents, schools and businesses have done a good job, providing Thanksgiving food baskets to area families in need.
Undoubtedly, there will be more appeals in the next month as the holidays pop up on the calendar, and we hope anyone who is capable does help out whenever possible. But not all community service must come in the form of financial contribution or food donations.
You can also serve your community by getting involved. You can volunteer your time to one of the many advisory boards and committees that help run South Brunswick. There are numerous openings on 16 different groups and the township is looking for volunteers to present to Township Council in January.
Some of the openings are on high-profile boards, such as the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Adjustment, but there is also the need for people to serve on lesser-known committees such as the Advisory Board of Health and Historical Preservation Committee.
There are openings that appeal to numerous levels of expertise, such as a need for plumbers and engineers to sit on planning and zoning boards. Or people with an eye for preservation may want to volunteer their time to the Historic Preservation Advisory Committee.
The full list of openings and an application is available at South Brunswick’s Web site at www.sbtnj.com. For more information, call (732) 329-4000, ext. 7313. Anyone interested should submit an application as soon as possible. The official reappointment meeting will be Jan. 2, but applications will be taken until the last minute.
The deadline to apply is Dec. 10. The openings will be filled by Township Council in January.
We urge all residents who can find the time to choose an area they care about and pitch in. It’s the kind of community service that can last long beyond the holidays.
