About one-fifth of Hopewell Valley’s population is 55 years or older, according to data from the 2000 U.S. Census.
This fact was obtained from a committee of local seniors working toward establishment of a full-service senior center in the Valley. The data was distributed during a Tuesday morning meeting involving local officials and the senior committee.
The data shows that 3,296, or 20.4 percent, of Hopewell Township’s 16,105 population was 55 years of age or older in the 2000 Census. Of those 3,296 senior residents, 904 were between ages 55 and 59; 677 were between 60 and 64; 1,103 were between 65 and 74; and 612 were between 75 and 84.
In Pennington in 2000, the 602 seniors counted in the census comprised 22.3 percent of the borough’s population of 2,696. There were 159 Penningtonians between ages 55 and 59; 89 between 60 and 64; 202 between 65 and 74; and 152 between 75 and 84.
In Hopewell Borough in 2000, 602 seniors accounted for 18.5 percent of the borough’s total population of 2,035. There were 104 residents between ages 55 and 59; 89 between 60 and 64; 113 between 65 and 74; and 69 between 75 and 84.
As the so-called "baby boomers," who were born after World War II come of age, the nation’s population is expected to become progressively older overall in the years ahead.
