South Brunswick resident killed a year ago in Plainsboro.
A Montgomery Township man has been indicted by a grand jury for a hit-and-run accident that resulted in the death of a bicyclist on northbound Route 1 near Scudders Mill Road in Plainsboro in December 2003.
John Maloney, 39, was indicted Tuesday by a Middlesex County grand jury on charges of vehicular homicide for the death of Shawn Frantz, 27, of South Brunswick. Mr. Maloney was also indicted for hindering his arrest, and for cocaine possession and distribution, Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Nicholas Sewitch said.
Mr. Maloney’s friend, William Csepi, 33, of Franklin Township was charged with witness tampering for telling Mr. Maloney’s girlfriend not to inform police about the incident, lying to police while under oath and hindering Mr. Maloney’s arrest, Mr. Sewitch said.
Mr. Maloney was said to be driving erratically on Route 1 when he struck a guardrail, struck Mr. Frantz, fled the scene, got rid of his truck and subsequently went to Mr. Csepi’s home, Mr. Sewitch said. At Mr. Csepi’s home, Mr. Maloney shared cocaine with others and asked Mr. Csepi to haul his damaged truck from Montgomery, he said.
A witness provided a description of Mr. Maloney’s truck and plate numbers to police, who identified Mr. Maloney as the owner, Mr. Sewitch said. Police subsequently found the vehicle at a yard on Cherry Valley Road, damaged and without its plates, and witnessed Mr. Csepi arrive with a tow truck, he said. Mr. Csepi said he knew nothing about the hit-and-run, and also indicated he was unaware of Mr. Maloney’s location, though it was later discovered that Mr. Maloney was at Mr. Csepi’s home at that time, Mr. Sewitch said.
Both men, who could each receive up to a 10-year jail sentence if convicted, remain free after posting bail, Mr. Sewitch said.
