MONROE Roger Marfit, 45, of East Railroad Avenue was charged with drug possession and assault with a motor vehicle, among other charges, at 4:35 p.m. Dec. 21 after fleeing the scene of a motor vehicle accident, police said.
According to police, Mr. Marfit was driving his 1996 Ford Ranger on Forsgate Drive when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed the road, hit a curb and then a tree at 4:16 p.m. Police said the passenger in the car, Robert Thorpe, 51, of Piscataway was trapped in the vehicle and had to be removed by the Central Monroe Fire Department.
He was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick by the Monroe Township First Aid Squad and a Paramedic Unit.
"He just got released from the hospital," Detective Sgt. Lawrence Linke said Monday afternoon.
Patrol Officer Jason Cohn arrived at the scene of the accident and determined from witnesses that Mr. Marfit had run down the railroad tracks.
Detective Sgt. Linke said two police officers went down the tracks and another group headed toward Jamesburg along the tracks. He said Jamesburg also had a few cars patrolling the area.
Mr. Marfit was taken into custody by Monroe and Jamesburg police on the railroad tracks behind Ridgeview Avenue at 4:35 p.m.
Police said Mr. Marfit was carrying nine packets of heroin and was charged with drug possession, resisting arrest and assault with a motor vehicle.
He was also issued summonses for reckless driving, failure to keep right, driving while suspended, leaving the scene of an accident and being an unlicensed driver.
Mr. Marfit is being held in the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center in default of $25,000 bail.
