To the editor:
Sometimes in life we get thrown a curve ball. It sets us back, but most times we get back on our feet, no worse for the wear. Others of us get thrown more than our fair share of ups and downs, but unfortunately the pieces don’t get picked up as easily. It is for this reason I’m reaching out to the South Brunswick community, who has always come through when the chips were down.
I read an letter several weeks ago in the South Brunswick Post by Jane Synder. She asked the community why we didn’t get involved with the man whose house burnt down. This is our chance to show our true colors by helping out a friend and neighbor in need.
Unbeknownst to myself, I found out a friend of mine had fallen on hard times, not the average life’s hardships, but the really rock-bottom ones that no one should ever have to live through, the kind where you find homelessness is only a breath away. You work two jobs,
raise two kids without a father, a father your kids have seen twice in their lifetime, and you attend church religiously every weekend.
How can this happen? I’m sure these are words that have gone through my friend’s mind as she tries to figure out how she’ll make it through another day. It has come down to her living in a motel, day by day, night by night, no light at the end of the tunnel, evicted from her home not because she lost her job, but because the two jobs she has can’t even pay the bill.
My friend has never looked for handouts, she’s always been a very proud woman. All she truly needs and wants is a place that is fit to raise her children, and a place that she can be proud to call her home.
She has been a south Brunswick resident for more than 15 years and has worked in the school district for more than 10. She has been a mentor to many children in South Brunswick, maybe even yours. She could be your neighbor or your friend, her children may be your children’s friends. It is for that reason I cannot divulge her name because there are children involved.
I remember a few years ago how South Brunswick came together as a community to help a family at Brookside Mobile Home Park who lost their child and home. Can we come together once again during this holiday season and help another family in need?
If you can help, please send your donations to the South Brunswick Community Relief Fund, c/o S.B. PBA Local 166, P.O. Box 45, Monmouth Junction, N.J. 08852 and they will be forwarded to this deserving family.
