Lewis B. Everett
Lewis Byron Everett, 89, of Wilmington, N.C., and formerly of Jamesburg, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, in the Lower Cape Fear Hospice and Life Care Center in Wilmington.
Born on March 29, 1915 in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Everett spent the majority of his adult life in the Westfield and Jamesburg areas and moved to Wilmington in 2001.
Mr. Everett graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1933 and then the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1937 with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. His career as a registered professional engineer and certified safety professional spanned over 50 years. After working for 22 years as a chemical engineer and safety director for Colgate-Palmolive-Peet Co. and Union Carbide and Plastics Co., he formed his own management safety consulting firm called L.B. Everett Associates in 1959.
His numerous professional memberships included the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Society of Safety Engineers, the National Fire Protection Association, the National Safety Council and the New Jersey State Industrial Safety Committee. He served as president of the New Jersey branch of the ASSE and on the editorial advisory board of its journal. In addition, Mr. Everett was a trustee of the United Fund Methodist Church of Westfield, and was vice president of the Westfield Senior Citizens Housing Planning Corporation. In this latter capacity, he was instrumental in the construction of the town’s first residence for moderate income senior citizens.
He and his wife moved to Rossmoor in 1976 and lived there for 25 years. They helped organize the Rossmoor Dance Club in 1984, and Mr. Everett served as the group’s first president. Further, the couple volunteered as the Dance Club’s resident modern and Latin ballroom dance instructors for several years. Mr. Everett was also active in the Rossmoor Tennis Club and was a president of that group, as well. He was vice chairman of the Deacons of the Rossmoor Community Church.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wanda Yaroshuk Everett; his daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Dave Kulp of Southport, N.C; three granddaughters, Melissa Bibbee of Centreville, Va., Allison Goldstein of Rapid City, S.D., and Lindsay Kulp of Southport, N.C.; and a great granddaughter, Sklyar Bibbee, of Centreville, Va.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, in the Rossmoor Community Church, followed by the spreading of ashes at his former church in Westfield, N.J.
