EDISON — The Edison High School boys bowling team split its two matches last week, posting a 4-0 win over East Brunswick, before falling 3-1 to Old Bridge.
Heading into this week’s action the Eagles are currently 10-4-1.
Mike McGlynn led the team as he’s done all season with a 610 series in the win over East Brunswick at Carolier Lanes in North Brunswick. McGlynn is currently the leading bowler in the Greater Middlesex Conference with a 213 average.
Junior Cliff Edwards turned in a 585 series ,while classmate Tim Kravitz bowled a 580 series.
“It was a good win for us,” Edison head coach Ken Bjornsen said. “There are so many good teams in the GMC this year so any win is a big one.”
In the loss to Old Bridge, McGlynn turned in another 610 series and Kravitz bowled games of 247, 209 and 212 for a 668 series.
“Tim had his shot lined up, he adjusted when he needed to, and the lanes were to his liking,” Bjornsen said. “The same can be said of Mike McGlynn but unfortunately not for the rest of the team.”
Steve Lariot turned in a 558 series, Wes Brown bowled a 517 series and Greg Crawford finished with a 325 series.
Old Bridge’s Dale Lennen led the winning side with a 626 series, while teammate Jon Brown turned in a 585 series.
Also bowling for Edison in the loss was Cliff Edwards who finished with a 280 series and James Sotomayor whose series tallied 286.
“Cliff Edwards is averaging 185 per game,” Bjornsen said. “He has improved tremendously since the beginning of the season. I think he sees how hard McGlynn and Kravitz work and he feeds off them.”
If Edwards continues to improve and can assert himself as a consistent bowler in time for postseason tournaments, the Eagles can be a dangerous team.
“With so many good teams this year, you really have to have all of your bowlers bowling well at the same time,” Bjornsen said. “Unfortunately that’s been our Achilles’ heel this year.”
The Eagles will compete in the qualifying round for the GMC Individual Championships at 2 p.m. today at Carolier Lanes.
“Mike McGlynn and Tim Kravitz are two of the most dedicated bowlers I have ever had,” Bjornsen said. “They should be in contention for a title, and it would sure be nice to see them do it.”
After qualifying action, the team will take on GMC rival South Brunswick at 3:45 p.m. tomorrow before competing in the Central Jersey Winter Classic at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. All action can be seen at Carolier Lanes.
“Among this type of competition you have to have five guys clicking at the same time,” Bjornsen said. “You have to have it or you don’t win, and you certainly can’t win in tournaments where every score counts. The boys all seem to take turns shining, but we have to get on the same page as the season winds down.”
