Jeremy Plofker, Fair Haven, recently received a chancellor’s scholarship from Syracuse (N.Y.) University, where he is majoring in civil engineering. Plofker is a student at the university’s L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science.
John Thompson, Little Silver, also received a chancellor’s scholarship from the university, where he is a communications major at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
The renewable scholarships are valued up to $8,000 per year, and are awarded to entering first-year and transfer students. Recipients are recognized for academic achievement in high school, extracurricular and community activities.
Peter Laurance, Little Silver, a student at Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft section of Middletown, was recently chosen to participate in the New Jersey Performing Arts Center’s “Jazz for Teens” program. The program was created in conjunction with WBGO-Jazz 88.3 FM, and involves students from 53 municipalities and 14 counties in New Jersey and New York. Laurance, a saxophonist, will take part in the program for the third year. Students were chosen at comprehensive skill and knowledge auditions. Laurance will participate in the 10-session program with 81 other students, with all students taking part in a professional recording session in December.
Artwork by Grace Chung, Amanda Jones and Christine Jones of Monmouth Regional High School, Tinton Falls, Ashley Moore and Lori Zimmerman from Keyport High School; and Peter St. Onge from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, Rumson; was recently selected for exhibit at Monmouth Beach Library, 18 Willow Ave. The students all took part in the Monmouth County Arts High School program held each spring at Fort Hancock, Sandy Hook. The 14-week program offers advanced arts classes to gifted and talented public school students in Monmouth County. Featured in the exhibit will be paintings and drawings by the students. Douglas Peters Jr., Little Silver, was recently selected as the first male vocalist from Red Bank Regional High School’s performing arts program to be accepted to the Music Educators All-Eastern Chorus. Peters is an 18-year-old senior at Red Bank Regional, Little Silver. He has been accepted to the All-Shore Chorus the past four years, the All-State Chorus the past three years, and was chosen to attend the Governor’s School for the Arts at The College of New Jersey, Ewing, this past summer.
Amy Smith, Red Bank, a junior at Communications High School, Wall, recently attended the National Young Leaders Conference “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today” in early November in Washington, D.C. Students are chosen for the conference based on high standards in academics and leadership. Smith and two other Communications students recently represented the school at the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology held in Dearborn, Mich. She is also a varsity cheerleader at Middletown High School South.
