Special week of events for Cranbury students

Cranbury School students will get the chance to wear slippers and sweats, or maybe even a wacky hat to school next week. They might even participate in a quiz show and play volleyball against their teachers.
And it will all happen as Spirit Week unfolds.
The four-day event, which kicks off after the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, is a reward of sorts for the more than 600 students at the school for the hard work they put in all year.
Vice Principal Christine Capaci said students from all grades will participate in next week’s events.
"It will bring the whole school community together, to celebrate who we are and take pride in the hard work of the students and the accomplishments of teachers," Ms. Capaci said.
Tuesday will see students wear slippers and sweats to school. On Wednesday they will attempt to be outlandish by sporting mismatched outfits in preparation for a Parent Teacher Organization-sponsored quiz show. Ms. Capaci said students will be divided into four teams and will compete for prizes.
"The questions will have to do with the school curriculum, current events and entertainment," Ms. Capaci said.
Thursday will be wacky hat day. Ms. Capaci said she has picked out her own wacky hat, and students will be able to break rules for one day to don some crazy headwear.
Jan. 21 will be the culmination of Spirit Week, with students encouraged to wear Cranbury School’s colors: blue and white.
In addition, upper grade students will be able to participate in a spelling bee, judged by teachers and a reporter from The Cranbury Press.
Students will then participate in a faculty versus students volleyball game in the new gym. According to Ms. Capaci, although teachers may have size on their side, the skills lay with the students.
"I was having lunch with the fourth-graders and one of them commented that I wasn’t very good at volleyball. In fact, I think I hit someone in the head with the ball last year," Ms. Capaci said.
Ms. Capaci said another aim of Spirit Week is to lift everybody’s spirits during the doldrums of January, after winter break and before the weather warmer in spring.
"It is a wonderful reminder of how the community comes together in the cold winter months when things are dormant. It renews your spirit," Ms. Capaci said.
