A 20-year-old Trenton man is in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick after being hit by a car while he was walking along Route 1 Saturday night.
Police said the victim, Bayshawn Miller, suffered a broken back, broken hip and a head injury when hit by a 1993 Jeep Cherokee driven by Theophilu Ashie, 55, of Kendall Park at 10:49 p.m. Saturday.
Mr. Miller was taken to the hospital by the Kendall Park First Aid Squad and paramedics. He was listed in critical condition as of Tuesday.
Police said they responded after receiving two reports of people walking in the roadway, and a third report that one of those people had been hit.
An investigation by Traffic Safety Officer Lazlo Nyitrai found that Mr. Miller had been drinking alcohol at the La Mirage motel on Route 1 prior to the accident, police said.
According to police, Mr. Miller and two friends were walking on Route 1 because a third friend left them without a car following an argument at the hotel. Police said Mr. Miller accidentally walked into the southbound lane of traffic.
Police said Mr. Ashie pulled over without knowing what he had hit. Two witnesses also pulled over, police said.
No charges have been filed, according to police, and the accident is under investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Nyitrai at (732) 329-4000, ext. 7430.
