Florence Niemiec

   HILLSBOROUGH — Florence C. Niemiec died Jan. 13 at home. She was 85.
   She served in the Army Nurse Corps as a lieutenant in the Philippines during World War II.
   Mrs. Niemiec her career in nursing, eventually retiring after 25 years of service as a school nurse in the Somerville Public Schools.
   She was active in both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. A member of the Manville Post 2290, she held numerous local, district and state offices in the Ladies Auxiliary, eventually serving as Department President in New Jersey from 1967 through 1968.
   When the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization made changes which permitted the acceptance of both men and women as members based on their own service records, she was the first woman in the State of New Jersey to receive member Status.
   Surviving are two sons, Michael and Richard of Whitehouse Station; a sister, Adeline Szymanski of Binghamton, N.Y.; and three grandchildren,
   A funeral service was held Jan. 18 from Cusick Funeral Home in Somerville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Mary, Mother of God Church in Hillsborough. Interment was in Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Armeytown.
