Richard L. Stoddard
State investment director
Richard L. Stoddard of Princeton died in his sleep Wednesday at home. He was 98.
Born in Decorah, Iowa, he was a Princeton resident since 1943.
Mr. Stoddard was director of investment for the state of New Jersey from 1964 until his retirement in 1975.
Following his retirement, he became a consultant for the state treasurer, acting as the treasurer’s representative with the South Jersey Port Corp.
In 1975, with Ken Holmes, he co-founded the National Association of State Investment Officers and, in 1995, he received the Richard Stoddard Award given each year to members of the association throughout the United States.
Mr. Stoddard studied at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University.
In 1933, he joined the accounting firm then known as Price Waterhouse and, in 1942, he became affiliated with Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon Suture Laboratories in New Brunswick as an accountant, eventually becoming treasurer.
In the late 1940s, he took his family to Scotland for two years, starting Ethicon Sutures there for Johnson & Johnson.
Mr. Stoddard was one of six Quakers who "re-founded" Princeton Friends Meeting which had, in the Quaker phrase, been "laid down," or closed, for many years. With his late wife, Charlotte, he also carried out occasional assignments for Burlington Quarterly Meeting and Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends. Mrs. Stoddard died in 1967.
Mr. Stoddard was also a long-term member of Springdale Golf Club in Princeton.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Peter Sielman of Salem, Conn.; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Family members have also cited Dora Bampo, his full-time caregiver over the past five years.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19 at Princeton Friends Meeting House, located at the intersection of Quaker Road and Princeton Pike.

MORGANTON, N.C. Edwin B. Dunham died Thursday. He was 90.
He was a former resident of Princeton.
Born in New York City, he was raised in Princeton from the age of 1 by his aunt and uncle, John P. and Ida Dunham Wilcox, after the death of his mother.
A licensed pharmacist since 1936, he became manager and then owner of the Wilcox Pharmacy on Nassau Street until the store’s closing in 1968.
He was a graduate of Princeton High School and the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1934.
Son of the late Joseph and Edna Harris Dunham, husband of the late Julia Barlow Dunham, father of the late Carol, he is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Sally Dunham of Morganton, N.C., and the Rev. Guy and Susan Dunham of York, Pa.; daughter and son-in-law Jill and Carmen Bianchi of Bear, Del.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Kimble Funeral Home, 1 Hamilton Ave., Princeton with his son, the Rev. Guy Dunham, officiating.
Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Interment will be in the Princeton Cemetery immediately following the service.

St. Paul’s Church member
Elizabeth C. Siren of Princeton died Saturday at University Medical Center at Princeton. She was 94.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had been a resident of Princeton for the past 20 years and was an active member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church Golden Agers.
Wife of the late Joseph K. Siren Jr., she is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth B. Siren of Princeton; sister Bobbie Butz of Maryland; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. today at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, 214 Nassau St., Princeton.
Burial will be private.

Active in community groups
HOPEWELL TOWNSHIP Marcia Dey Vander Zee Powell died Thursday at University Medical Center at Princeton. She was 75.
Born in Grand Rapids, Mich., she lived in the Princeton area 26 years.
She taught at the former Miss Mason’s School and had been very active in The Princeton University Art Museum Docent Association and The Present Day Club. She was a former president of The Women’s College Club of Princeton and chairman of the club’s Memorial Education Loan Fund.
She was a University of Maryland graduate.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, William K. Powell; daughters and sons-in-law Karin and Charles Riffle of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Nancy and Douglas Hartzog of Lexington, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law Mark and Kathleen Powell of Annapolis Md.; sisters and brothers-in-law Suzanne and Leslie Peppin-Palmer of Bluffton, S.C., Mary Claire and Charles Eastman of Atlanta Ga., and Betsy and Skip Hutchison of Alameda, Calif.; and grandchildren Craig Hartzog, Charlotte Anne Hartzog Kermode, Brian Powell, Kelly Powell and Meghan Powell.
A private service will be held by the family.

PENNINGTON Elizabeth D. "Betsy" Barlow died Thursday at home. She was 79.
Born in Trenton, she was a lifelong area resident.
Miss Barlow retired from Educational Testing Service in Lawrence after many years of service.
She was an active community volunteer and very involved with St. James Church in Pennington.
Daughter of the late Sumner H. and Elizabeth D. Long Barlow, sister-in-law of the late Isaac R. McGraw, aunt of the late Ellen and Molly McGraw, niece of the late Anne Long Kerney Day, cousin of the late Martin Nicholson, she is survived by her sister, Clare Barlow McGraw of Bucks County, Pa.; and nieces and nephews I. Ross and Kay McGraw and Kate McGraw and her husband, Harry Phillips.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Thursday in St. James Church, 115 E. Delaware Ave., Pennington.
Burial will be in the Pennington Cemetery.
Calling hours will 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the time of Mass.

Son lives in Princeton
MONROE TOWNSHIP Lucille S. Distler died Saturday. She was 79.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Distler was a former resident of Long Island, N.Y., before moving to New Jersey 18 years ago.
Wife of the late William Distler, she is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Stephen and Roxanne Distler of Princeton and David and Katherine Distler of Jericho, N.Y.; brother Irwin Gafman; and grandchildren Alexis, Theodore, Jaclyn, and Emma Distler.
The funeral services and burial will be 11 a.m. today at Mount Ararat Cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
